Temporary Relief Before Your Appointment
These steps can ease the pain while you wait to be seen, but they are not a substitute for treatment:
- Rinse gently with warm salt water to clean the area and reduce inflammation.
- Take over-the-counter pain relief such as ibuprofen, following the label.
- Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek for swelling.
- Avoid very hot, cold, sugary, or hard foods on that side.
- Do NOT place aspirin directly on the gum, it can burn the tissue.
When a Toothache Is an Emergency
Call us right away if your toothache is severe, has lasted more than one to two days, or comes with swelling, fever, or a bad taste in your mouth. These are signs of infection that can spread quickly and need urgent treatment.
